The banking world has become more complex than ever before. Constant cost pressures, intense competition, regulatory requirements, and digital transformation demand the highest level of performance and understanding from every bank employee. This makes it all the more important to understand the fundamentals of banking management. The “Banking for Non-Bankers” seminar provides a concise and practical overview of how banks and financial markets operate. Participants will learn about the most important business models and structures in the banking context, regulatory frameworks, and fundamental management and risk concepts in the banking sector. The goal is to build a solid understanding of key relationships in the banking business - even without prior banking experience.

  • Module 1: Institutional basics of the Banking System (2 days)
    An overview of the structure and functioning of the financial system. This module introduces the key players, customer groups, and financial products, and explains the business model of financial service providers.
  • Module 2: Supervision, Governance, and Compliance (1 day)
    An introduction to banking regulation and its significance for the organization and management of banks. Key regulatory frameworks (including CRR/CRD, MaRisk, SREP) as well as governance and compliance requirements.
  • Module 3: Bank Accounting (1 day)
    Structure of the bank balance sheet and basics of accounting in the banking sector. Participants learn about the structure and logic of a bank balance sheet as well as key sources of income and valuation principles in the banking business.
  • Module 4: Profitability Management (2 days)
    Overview of methods for managing profitability in the banking business. Topics include the contribution margin method, market interest rate method, return on investment, and the relationship between profit requirements and individual terms.
  • Module 5: Risk Management for Specialists (2 days)
    An introduction to the measurement and management of key risk types in banks. Topics covered include credit, interest rate, and liquidity risks, non-financial risks, and fundamental concepts of risk-bearing capacity.

Tuition fee

Depending on your prior knowledge, the modules can be booked either as a complete package or individually.

Certification

Participants will receive a certificate of attendance from zeb.business school.
Alternatively, participants have the option to complete the seminar with a certificate from Steinbeis University - this option involves an additional fee.

Location

The seminar will be held in a hybrid format: You can choose whether to attend in person at the zeb campus in Frankfurt am Main or online.
